Kyushu offers authentic Japanese experiences

Travelers seeking authentic Japanese culture will find new experiences on Kyushu, the southwestern main island. Simon Metcalfe of the Kyushu Tourism Organization highlighted the destination’s unique offerings, including insights into the legendary Samurai warriors. Visitors can learn swordsmanship and even dress in Samurai attire for a stage performance.

The island is known for its dramatic scenery, shaped by 17 active volcanoes. Metcalfe described Kyushu as being “built by fire and ringed by water.” Its natural features also include numerous hot springs, which are a central part of the island’s wellness offerings.

Active tourists can explore the volcanic terrain by bike. “The fun part for me was going downhill,” Metcalfe said, noting that e-bikes are available for the cycling expeditions. The island can also be traversed by “fun sightseeing trains,” which offer a relaxed way to take in the environment.

Wellness opportunities are another draw. Metcalfe mentioned treatments like being covered in hot sand, which is believed to aid circulation. The hospitality sector is also growing, with new hotel openings on the horizon, including a future InterContinental property and the upcoming Aso Retreat HONO, which Metcalfe described as a “beautiful, beautiful hotel.” Nov. 2 will see the opening of the Aso Retreat HONO, which Metcalfe said is a “beautiful, beautiful hotel.” The evening was also told by Naoki Ishida of Fukuoka International Airport Co. that he hopes those in this country’s tourism trade will help raise the profile of his part of the world.

Fukuoka International Airport serves as a key gateway. Naoki Ishida of the airport company hopes to raise Kyushu’s profile among Canadian travelers. “We believe that Kyushu is great for travellers who want to experience the real Japan,” he stated. The airport offers routes to 25 international destinations and 24 daily flights to Okinawa.
