Porter Airlines celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday, marking two decades of growth and expansion. The event, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, brought together travel advisors, industry partners, and Porter team members to reflect on the airline’s journey.
The celebration took place overlooking Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the departure point of Porter’s first flight to Ottawa on October 23, 2006. Since then, the airline has transported over 49 million passengers and expanded its workforce from 100 employees to more than 4,400, becoming Canada’s third-largest airline.
Overcoming Initial Skepticism
Edmond (Eddy) Eldebs, Porter’s senior vice-president and chief commercial officer, recalled the doubts surrounding the airline’s launch. He stated that starting a new airline faced significant skepticism at the time. However, this doubt may have inadvertently benefited Porter, as it underestimated the demand for an improved flying experience.
Porter’s focus on enhancing the small details of air travel has been a key driver of its success. The airline has nearly tripled its fleet since introducing Embraer E195-E2 jets in 2023, growing from 29 to 85 aircraft. It now serves 33 destinations across 131 routes, spanning Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.
Continued Expansion Efforts
Porter shows no signs of slowing its growth. The airline has ordered up to 100 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with 56 already in operation. This expansion will largely target alternative urban centers, providing travelers with more options.
Hamilton will see its network grow to 13 routes, while London, Ontario, will offer four sun destinations during the upcoming winter season. In April, Porter plans to launch five new domestic routes from London, connecting it to Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Halifax.
The inclusion of Montréal Metropolitan Airport in Porter’s network is another aspect of its growth strategy. Eldebs projects the airline to grow by approximately 25% this year and another 25% next year.
Commitment to Passenger Experience
Kevin Jackson, Porter’s president, attributes the airline’s achievements to its consistent focus on passenger experience. Complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, premium snacks, and the absence of middle seats are among the popular amenities.
Jackson highlights the dedication of Porter’s staff as a key differentiator. He notes that customers value the passion and commitment demonstrated by the airline’s employees, which sets Porter apart from competitors.
Porter’s Growth Strategy and Industry Impact
The airline’s success is attributed to its focus on passenger experience, with complimentary amenities and a dedicated staff. Travel advisors are key to Porter’s distribution strategy, accounting for nearly 50% of its passenger bookings.
Strategic Partnerships and Travel Advisors
Partnerships have significantly contributed to Porter’s growth. Porter’s partnerships, including its joint venture with Air Transat and relationships with American Airlines and British Airways, have also played a significant role.
Jackson emphasizes the importance of travel agents in introducing the airline to new markets and expresses appreciation for their collaboration.
Among those celebrating were Elsa Pascolo and Jarron Francis of Montreal-based Encore Travel, a Canadian-owned travel management company that has worked with Porter since its early days. Pascolo, who travelled from Florida for the occasion, appreciated meeting airline partners face-to-face and the opportunity to exchange ideas directly with senior executives.
As a gesture of gratitude, guests at the anniversary event received two flight vouchers to anywhere Porter flies.
