Air Canada adds new winter routes for Canadian travelers

Air Canada has revised its winter flight schedule based on Canadian traveler preferences, emphasizing both familiar vacation spots and easier access to unexplored destinations. Ipsos research indicates that 72% of Canadians seek relaxation during winter getaways, while 55% admit limited exploration of potential destinations. Nearly one-quarter consistently return to the same locations annually, yet 36% remain open to new experiences for the chance to discover fresh favorites.

Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, highlights how travelers balance loyalty to traditional destinations with curiosity about unfamiliar ones. The airline’s expanded winter network aims to reduce hesitation by offering more direct flights and bundled vacation packages. These additions directly address key concerns such as safety, healthcare quality, and political stability, alongside weather and cost.

The new routes include direct flights to Tenerife, Roatán, Santo Domingo, Mérida, and Mazatlán, along with seasonal service from Montréal, Toronto, and Vancouver. These destinations provide opportunities to visit volcanic terrain, Pacific coastlines, and cultural centers without the inconvenience of connecting flights. Air Canada’s research reveals that while 49% of Canadians favor Hawaii as a future winter escape, Costa Rica and Australia also rank highly at 47% and 41%, respectively. Central and South America, including Colombia and Peru, attract 37% of interest despite their relative unfamiliarity, while 33% express openness to long-haul trips to the Asia-Pacific region.

Through its long-haul network, Air Canada connects Canadians to destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Bangkok, Manila, Sydney, and Buenos Aires, while maintaining strong service to sun destinations like Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, and Aruba. The airline’s expanded schedule includes seasonal flights departing from cities including Winnipeg (to Montego Bay and Punta Cana) and Québec City (to Pointe-à-Pitre).

Travelers seeking variety can now explore diverse climates and activities, from Tenerife’s volcanic environments to Mazatlán’s Pacific beaches, without committing to a single destination. Air Canada’s Vacations packages combine flights with hotels and activities, simplifying the booking process. The airline’s adjustments reflect evolving travel habits, where Canadians increasingly value flexibility to revisit favorites or explore new places, provided reliable service makes decision-making easier.
